Horst Antes (born 1936, Heppenheim, Germany) From 1957 to 1959, Antes studied with the prominent woodcarver H.A.P. Grieshaber at the Academy of Visual Arts (now the State Academy of Visual Arts Karlsruhe). In 1959, the artist was awarded two prizes for his work: the City of Hanover Art Prize and the Pankofer Prize on the occasion of the German Youth Art Prize. In his early paintings, Antes sought a path somewhere between figurative painting and L'Art Informel. One of his most important examples was Willem de Kooning. Around 1960, Antes discovered his "Kopffüßler" (literally translated: head-footer), a form that occupied the artist in countless variations and artistic techniques. By 1963, his "Kopffüßler" (Head Pieces) had fully developed its stylistic and contextual principles and became a permanent feature of his sculpture, which he began creating that same year. Since 1990, Antes has lived and worked in Karlsruhe, Florence, and Berlin. His oeuvre includes not only paintings and graphic art, but also sculptures for public spaces. His works are exhibited worldwide and are represented in all major German collections, including the Kunsthalle Hamburg, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Nationalgalerie Berlin and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
