André van der Vossen (Haarlem, February 26, 1893 – Overveen, May 17, 1963) was a Dutch artist, graphic designer, and illustrator. He studied at the School of Applied Arts in Haarlem and later worked as a typographer at Johan Enschede en Zonen, where he created posters, book illustrations, and other stylized works using woodcuts and lithography. Van der Vossen's early career focused on graphic art, including designing postage stamps and making woodcuts. In 1929, he began exploring painting and became interested in Abstract Expressionism, drawing inspiration from artists such as Kandinsky. After 1950, his work ranged from strictly geometric to Abstract Expressionist styles, incorporating oil paint, gouaches, and collages. The chalk drawing shown here is an example from this period.
